Institutions Ignored: A History of Select Committee Scrutiny in the House of Lords, 1968–2021

Within the vast seam of scholarship on parliamentary history evolution and role select committees in house lords, particularly relation to investigatory or policy-focused committees, has been almost completely overlooked. They have ‘institutions ignored’. This gap existing research base is stark when compared with very large literature commons. article fills this by providing first detailed historical account lords. reveals a distinctive ‘scrutiny style’ moulded around notion complementarity, highly specialised approach an understanding merits self-restraint. However, during 2018–21 fundamental review committee system was undertaken within lords which led significant change both structure ambition committees. The impact reform agenda likely ensure that Lords are far more visible future, beyond Palace Westminster, than they were past.
